When I’m writing, it’s my job to come up with all the humor myself. But here’s ten times when hockey was funny without my help.
1. The Plastic Rats in Florida a.k.a. The Rat Trick!
After a game in 1995, Panthers player Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room before scoring two goals, sparking a bizarre tradition. Fans now fling plastic rats onto the ice after victories. Weird, right? And I like it better than that Octopus thing in Detroit, because… poor octopus!
2. Patrick Roy Forgets He’s a Goalie
Legendary goalie Patrick Roy once skated the puck past center ice—illegal for a goalie—and received a penalty. Roy apparently forgot the rules in the heat of the moment, leaving everyone scratching their heads (and laughing). YouTube proof.
3. Bobby Ryan’s Stick Swap Goal
Mikko Koivu stole Bobby Ryan’s stick after dropping his own, and then Ryan responded by scoring with Koivu’s stick! Even the announcers don’t figure out what happened for a couple of minutes.
4. Auston Matthews’s Skate Blade Fiasco
Towed to the bench like a broken down Volkswagen bus! It’s so funny.
5. Weirdest Stanley Cup Winning Goal (Kane, 2010)
Patrick Kane scored the overtime Stanley Cup winner, but nobody noticed except Kane himself—the light didn’t flash, there was confusion on the ice, and the celebration started before official confirmation.
6. A Player Forgets to Remove his Skate Guards
Okay, it makes me feel better to see this because I did the same thing once last spring! And went down hard. See Shane Pinto try to join play but forgetting to remove his skate guards—wobbling and falling onto the ice.
7. Two Goalies Fight, Fans Cheer
These are all funny. They just are.
8. Lineups Lip Sync
This Penguin lip syncing with the lineup announcement is a good time. Well done, Kuhnhackl.
9. Puck Lands on Top of the Glass at a Preds Blackhawks Game
A puck getting stuck atop the glass—rather than landing in the stands or on ice—is a one-in-a-million occurrence that stopped play and gave everyone a laugh.
10. Will Ferrell as a “Drunk Buddy the Elf” at a Kings Game
Actor Will Ferrell surprised everyone by showing up at a Kings-Flyers game dressed as a tipsy Buddy the Elf, claiming he’d been “laid off from the North Pole.” He was convincingly rumpled in his costume from the movie. Hilarious!
