The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Sarina says:
Okay, I never read sci-fi. Like never. In the last ten years I can name one other sci fi that I enjoyed.
But my smart friend Amy Jo Cousins recommended this on Twitter, so I closed Twitter (a life goal of mine) and opened book one of this bestselling series instead, just to see what all the fuss is about.
And, oops! I was sucked in and binged the series immediately. I also did this series on audio, which is another thing I never do. I don’t even know myself anymore.
That’s actually the theme of this series—knowing your human self and understanding it. Murderbot (the name it calls itself) is a “construct,” which means a bot built in a factory from both organic and inorganic parts. Because it has human tissue, it has some human characteristics…like social anxiety. But it also has a lot of superhuman capacities and a general disdain for humans who are slower, dumber and more vulnerable than Murderbot.
The result is a badass who is struggling to get in touch with these horrible, uncomfortable things called emotions. And the struggle is funny, smart and snarky. I love it so much!
Note: this is not a romance at all. And I don’t care! (Who am I anymore?)
