The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles
…and the whole Charm of Magpies trilogy
Genre: Romantasy, M/M style. So… RoMMantasy?
Vibe: Ye Olde London, gritty, magical
Tension: angsty and exciting
I have to be in just the right mood to pick up a historical, which is my excuse for waiting so long to read these wonderful books. The writing is gorgeous, and I love the effortless way she creates the magical world that Crane and Stephen inhabit.
The characters are the real standouts here. Lord Crane is an aristocrat with swagger, but a completely unpredictable one. Stephen Day is a worried, law-abiding liar. In other words, they are each their own steaming pile of contradictions, and utterly irresistible, too.
Oh, and they start off the book embroiled in a major hereditary conflict. So you get those hate-to-love vibes right away, as a first class adventure is just kicking in. Read it for the magical hook, stay for the lovely romance.
Each book in the trilogy is a new adventure, and each one is on the shorter side, which makes the series extra-bingeable!
